The Finisher is the fourth book in The Dark Verse series written by New York Times bestselling author Runyx. The story follows Alessandro 'Alpha' Villanova, Dante Maroni’s half-brother and the ruler of a dark city, and Zephyr de la Vega, a bubbly, cheerful girl living a normal life, working as a hairdresser. When Zephyr and Alpha’s paths cross, they form a marriage of convenience that changes their lives forever. Their bond deepens as a killer in Los Fortis goes on a spree, and Alpha is framed for the murders. Together they find out dark secrets about the Syndicate while their relationship evolves into a passionate slow-burn romance. This book explores themes such as grumpy/sunshine dynamic, marriage of convenience, dark romance, mafia romance, second chance, redemption, healing, mystery, forced-proximity, violence, crime, secrets, betrayal, found family, and trauma.
Zephyr lives a normal, happy life with a loving family, working as a hair-stylist at a charitable organization that Alpha runs. When one day, Zephyr goes to an underground fighting club, she is stunned to find out that the big strong fighter known as Alpha, is the same man she fell in love with ten years ago. But sadly, Alpha doesn’t remember her, because he lost his memory in an incident where he lost his eye ten years back.
After Zephyr’s breakup, she has no choice but to form a marriage of convenience with Alpha in order to claim her grandmother’s inheritance. Haunted by their pasts, hiding the truth, Alpha and Zephyr often misunderstand each other as Zephyr finds herself holding an unrequited love in her heart for Alpha while Alpha is scared of hurting her by any means.
As the rumors about the serial killer grow and Alpha is accused, Zephyr finds herself getting involved more in a dark and dangerous world. Now along with Tristan, Morana, Dante and Amara, Zephyr and Alpha are also in danger by the Syndicate. How long will this game of suffering go on? And did Zephyr and Alpha make the right choice by teaming up?
Okay so this wasn’t my type of book so I wasn’t enjoying it at first, but when I reached chapter twenty-nine, I was absolutely hooked. All that betrayal and how everything started making so much sense at the end was so shocking, but also so tragic. Zephyr had traits similar to me so I sympathized with her.
Obviously, one of the biggest motivations I had for reading this book was because of Dante and Amara. Moments where Tempest, Tristan, Morana and Xander were mentioned, were really lovely as well. I loved reading about both the couples as parents and guardians.
I really like how Runyx made every girl in her series different from each other, and their men the perfect match for them. Zephyr and Alpha’s story was filled with passion, tension and slow-burn. I liked both the characters for how sweet and genuine they are. Overall, I’d say I give this book a three-star rating.
The Predator was the first part in the series. Dark Verse is a total of six books in the series, with each character having their own story in every book, with Tristan and Morana in the first two parts, The Predator and The Reaper. Amara and Dante are in the third part in The Emperor. Zephyr and Alpha in the fourth part in The Finisher, and Shadowman and Lyla in the fifth part, The Annihilator. The last part, The Syndicator, follows these four couples, every character getting their own chapters, and wraps up the entire Dark Verse Series.
This part was the first and last story of Alpha and Zephyr, but don’t worry! We will see them again in the other parts too, and we will read their story more in the last part. Don’t drop the series if it’s not interesting yet, because in the later parts it gets even more intense and you’ll find yourself unable to put the book down.
