The Annihilator is the fifth book in The Dark Verse series written by New York Times bestselling author Runyx. The story follows Lyla, a victim of trafficking at a young age, and the well-known “Shadowman” who murders anyone who tries to hurt Lyla. Every day, Lyla’s strength is tested as she is pulled deeper and deeper into the cruel Syndicate, getting abused and losing her motivation to survive. Shadowman is determined to rescue her, and so a dark, obsessive and possessive love story is born. The book involves how Lyla heals from her trauma and the torture she survived for years. Secrets and mysteries about the Syndicate and the Shadowman, the myth, are discovered. The book involves genres such as possession, obsessive romance, dark romance, mafia romance, healing, mystery, anti-hero, age-gap, forced-proximity, violence, crime, secrets, betrayal, found family, and trauma.
Lyla has been a victim of trafficking since a young age for years. She has never seen the outside world, never had a family, the only person because of whom she keeps surviving is the mysterious “Shadowman”. She is used as bait to lure the Shadowman, because the Syndicate knows the only way for Shadowman to make an appearance is when somebody tries to hurt Lyla.
Lyla has always known slavery and abuse, so when the Shadowman finally rescues her, she doesn’t know how to act or what to do with her life. Shadowman helps her, gives her a place to live, helps her discover new hobbies and helps her heal from her trauma. Their journey is about healing and character development, both of them forming an obsessive, possessive dynamic.
Lyla is a tragic, broken character who relies on Shadowman as her only hope. The story discusses about how she overcomes her fears and learns about herself more. Meanwhile, Shadowman realizes just how addicted he is to Lyla. Secrets about the Syndicate are unraveled. Will they ever find happiness in their cruel world? Will Lyla finally learn to love herself despite her scars? Will Shadowman ever feel any emotions, feel alive? And just how long will the Syndicate remain?
I did not like this part honestly. It had a lot of unnecessary scenes and honestly, it was cringe. It made me uncomfortable and it bored me. Yes, I do like Lyla, but not too much, and this book took me the longest to finish because it wasn’t my type. It felt like a burden and I finished it lazily.
Although it did have some twists and turns so I’ll appreciate that. I’m just glad I finished it. I liked Lyla’s character development. She is strong for surviving for so long. But I felt like her relationship with Shadowman was toxic. Shadowman’s character was unreal and felt cringe at times. I did like his aura but mostly I feel like there was no progress in this book. Overall, it was a two-star for me.
The Predator was the first part in the series. Dark Verse is a total of six books in the series, with each character having their own story in every book, with Tristan and Morana in the first two parts, The Predator and The Reaper. Amara and Dante are in the third part in The Emperor. Zephyr and Alpha in the fourth part in The Finisher, and Shadowman and Lyla in the fifth part, The Annihilator. The last part, The Syndicator, follows these four couples, every character getting their own chapters, and wraps up the entire Dark Verse Series.
This part was the first and last story of Lyla and Shadowman, but don’t worry! We will see them again in the last part. Don’t drop the series if it’s not interesting yet, because in the last part, it gets even more intense and you’ll find yourself unable to put the book down.
