Reckless is a young adult fantasy novel written by the American author Lauren Roberts. It is the second part in the Powerless Trilogy, Fearless being the third along with the novellas Powerful and Fearful. The story takes place in the kingdom of Ilya and the city of Dor. After killing the king, Paedyn Gray, the Ordinary is on the run from the same person she had wanted to run to before: Kai Azer, prince of Ilya, now Ilya’s Enforcer having sworn duties with his brother Kitt Azer, the new king. Conflicted between his duties and his feelings for Paedyn, Kai has vowed to find and bring Paedyn Gray to justice. This book involves class divisions (Elites vs Ordinaries), oppression, survival, political tension, secrets, violence, enemies-to-lovers and dark fantasy.
Reckless is told through the dual perspectives of Paedyn Gray and Prince Kai Azer. After barely surviving the deadly Purging Trials, Paedyn Gray is on the run. Once known as “The Silver Savior” for saving Prince Kai, she is now one of the most wanted fugitives in the kingdom. Her secret is exposed, the king is dead, and the world she once hid from is collapsing around her. With the Elites and Ilya’s Enforcer hunting her, Paedyn is forced into a far more dangerous game—one where every choice, every lie, and every heartbeat could cost her life.
Beside her is Prince Kai Azer, the powerful Elite who was raised to uphold the laws that condemn people like Paedyn. Bound by guilt, loyalty, and a growing connection he can no longer deny, Kai must decide whether he will follow and carry out his duties as Enforcer… or protect the girl who changed everything for him. But helping her means turning against everything he was taught to believe, and risking execution himself.
As Paedyn and Kai navigate a kingdom on the brink of rebellion, new enemies rise, old alliances shatter, and the line between trust and betrayal fades. Paedyn must learn to survive in a world that sees her as nothing, while Kai struggles to discover who he is without the crown’s control.
With danger closing in, forbidden feelings intensifying, and the fate of the kingdom hanging in the balance, Paedyn and Kai must face the consequences of their choices. In a land where power defines worth and secrets can kill, being reckless may be the only way to survive for both of them.
Reckless was interesting, but overall, it felt slow to me. It got a little boring and felt like the book is being dragged forcefully and the repetitive environment made it hard to stay engaged. While there were moments I genuinely enjoyed, this book ended up being my least favorite in the entire series. I kept feeling like the story could’ve been shorter, or at least trimmed down, because many scenes felt unnecessarily long and repetitive.
For most of the book, it felt like nothing truly of worth was happening. The opening chapters were pretty good, and the ending definitely picked up the pace and piqued interest because of the plot twist, but the middle section was difficult to get through. It took me a long time to finish because I wasn’t enjoying it as much. Overall, it felt heavy and a bit depressing, which made the reading experience less enjoyable for me.
After this comes Fearless, the finale. I’m excited to finally find out everything about Paedyn’s and Kai’s past and what happens in the end. This part frustrated me, but still some parts were worth it and I liked a lot of quotes so I will give it a three-star.
Read about the First Part (Powerless) of this Series.
