Fourth Wing is written by New York Times Bestselling Author “Rebecca Yarros”. It is the first part of The Empyrean Series, Iron Flame being the second part. The plot revolves around the brutal and elite war college for dragon riders. It includes violence, dragons, blood and gore, politics, fantasy, paranormal activities, and romance.
It’s from the perspective of a twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail who’s the daughter of the commanding General Lilith Sorrengail and the younger sibling of Mira Sorrengail and Brennan. Violet joins the Basgiath War College of Navarre in hopes of becoming a Scribe and living a peaceful life. However, that dream changes really quickly when her tough-as-talons mother orders her to join the Dragon Rider Quadrant.
The Riders Quadrant is very different from the Scribes Quadrant because dragons don’t listen to humans. They simply don’t care who they kill with their dragon fire. Violet has to muster up the courage to cross the terrifying parapet, make it all the way through Gauntlet to the Threshing where dragons bond humans they deem worthy. Any tiny mistake could lead to death which is unescapable because once you enter the Riders Quadrant, there’s no way out except either graduate… or die. Because after all “A dragon without it’s rider is a tragedy, a rider without their dragon is dead”.
With so many cadets and fewer dragons willing to bond this year, there’s a higher chance that someone might try to kill Violet either because she’s the general’s daughter or simply because they’ll fight to earn to a dragon and kill anyone who stands in their way. Just like their terrifying and ruthless wingleader Xaden Riorson.
Damn Rebecca has a way of ripping hearts out doesn't she. Okay so the first part (Fourth Wing) was absolutely addictive. The setting, the characters, THE DRAGONS! The second part (Iron Flame) was a bit boring in the start and in between but the ending had me on a chokehold. What the heck was the ending? I have so many theories and questions, that cliffhanger is eating me alive to get my hands on the third part which will come out next year.
I loved the fight scenes and the gore, fire and venin concept and all. I won't say the series is enemies to lovers though, yes Xaden did scare Violet in the start but he wasn't her enemy really, but I still enjoyed the trope. I'd say though that my favorite character has to be Liam. Yes, I'd choose Liam over Xaden.
Ridoc serves as the perfect comedian and comfort character (Rebecca please don't kill him or any of their squad member). I love Jesinia too she gives elegant vibes. Rhiannon has my heart and so does Sawyer. Brennan and Mira are such lovely siblings. Garrick and Bodhi are so hot and supportive. Imogen and Quinn have my respect. Sloane reminds me of Liam, so I love her she's so precious. Aaric is so gorgeous I want more of his scenes. Lilith Sorrengail made me cry my eyes out and of course Violet has my heart and soul. Tairn, Andarna and Sgaeyl are the greatest trio of dragons. I want to murder Jack and I forgive Dain to be honest. I wonder what kind of dragon Andarna will grow up to be!
I'm so excited for the next part and I want this series to so badly be a TV series. This book made me cry, laugh and wince in pain. It was a wholesome experience, one that I hold very dear to my heart. As a dragon lover, I absolutely adore this novel. I would like to rate Fourth Wing a five-star and Iron Flame a three-star.
